Piecemakers
Quilt Club was founded in 2001 when the request was made to establish a quilt
club in the county. Affiliated with the Huntington County Extension Homemakers,
the club functions as a specialty club. The club participates in county
activities such as Ladies Day at the Fair, Open Class at the 4-H Fair,
Achievement Day and the annual Holiday Cookie and Candy Sale. Sixty-six members
were listed on the club’s charter.
Community service is an important part of this club. Participation in making
and distributing quilts to various charities has been of great priority. Nearly
1000 quilts have been provided to Project Linus, Parkview Huntington Hospital
pediatrics unit, Salvation Army Gift of Warmth Program, LOVE in the Name of
Christ, the American Red Cross, the Veteran’s Administration, McKenzie’s Hope
Children’s Advocacy Center, and national hurricane and tornado relief efforts.
Families of the critically ill and grieving military families have also received
our quilts. Club members having lost loved ones or are dealing with serious
illness have also been comforted with these quilt gifts.
Education is equally important. The club has hosted local and nationally known
quilt artists for workshops for members and the public. Lessons are presented
at most club meetings throughout the year, many taught by the members
themselves. Members have been involved in hosting local quilt shows to present
the love of quilting to the community and surrounding areas. Demonstrations
have been given by members at the Forks of the Wabash Pioneer Festival and also
at the annual Quilt Show.
Piecemakers Quilt Club meets the first Thursday of every month at Evangelical U.M. Church, 1000 Flaxmill Rd, Huntington, Indiana. Visitors are most welcome.
